Kathmandu Kora ’14

Kathmandu is a great city to live in, the most annoying problem we share might be the lack of electricity. You have everything that is required to make life go by smoothly, from the basic necessities to luxurious recreational facilities. And when things get difficult, there are facilities that can heal diseases for people teetering on the brink of death. A birth of a new born baby is a joyous miracle greeted with smiles, joys and celebration. Only 45kms away from the Kathmandu Valley, in the southern Lalitpur VDC of Pyutar tells a very different story. Despite being so close to the well facilitated urban heaven, Pyutar lacks the basic infrastructure to facilitate the birth of a new born baby. Because it is difficult to afford for many to go to Kathmandu to deliver their baby, many mothers are forced to it at home.

“Most births take place at night. Due to load shedding and lack of an inverter I deliver babies with just one hand as the other holds a torch. It is a scary situation,”  said Gyanu.Timilsina, Auxiliary nurse, Pyutar VDC Lalitpur. “Since the demolition a temporary birthing center, all new births now take place at home. Few expecting mothers who can afford will travel to Kathmandu a month ahead to give birth.”

A tradition that began in 2011, the Kathmandu Kora gave it continuity by shifting their focus from the less developed regions of Nepal to a region much closer to the capital for this year. Organized in association with Socialtours and Save the Children Nepal, the Kathmandu Kora 2014 had planned to raise up to Rs. 2 million to build an Eco-Designed building, providing the best facilities to the women and children in this remote VDC.

Overall, the rally had been segmented into 3 categories: the 50kms, the 75kms and the 100kms. This year there was a participation of more than 1500 participants from all over Nepal, where approximately 1300 rode in the 50k category, 170 people in the 75k category and 60 people in the 100k. The riders of the different categories were distinguished by 3 different colored jerseys, red, blue and yellow respectively.

The ride passed through Kirtipur this year, where riders were greeted with traditional Dhimme bajas and other Newari instruments. It brought out the essence of the Newar community of Kirtipur, which was a nice addition to the rally. At the end of the rally, medals reading out the message ‘everyone is a winner’ were distributed by members of 1974 AD to those who completed the rally.

Till now, the money collected sums up to Rs. 12 lakhs as pledges from various sources. Which is a very good amount; however the targeted sum is Rs. 2 millions and they are still running short. So if you still haven’t made your pledges yet, you can do so by going to www.kathmandukora.net. To raise more funds, Socialtours are selling out raffle tickets for Rs. 300 with a prize of a Giant Bike worth Rs. 55000.

The money raised through this event will be channeled through Karma Foundation with zero incurred administrative cost to the District Health Office Lalitpur. Save the Children has received a written approval from the District Health Office Lalitpur to construct a new birthing center in Pyutar VDC. Without the help of Kathmandu Cycle City 2020, volunteers from Thames International College and other biking clubs, this event would not have been possible. Thanks to them and the core organizers, Pyutar might still have a chance.
