The Prodigy Crossover Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross

Mitsubishi Eclipse, a name that is all to familiar in the fast and the furious world, and for us who have grown up watching the movies have a very old relation with that name. However the eclipse that we are talking about here is far from the vehicle that we can relate to. The vehicle in question is the Mitsubishi eclipse is a cross over vehicle, unlike the eclipse of the fast and the furious which was a convertible sports car.

Leon Motors Pvt. Ltd. The authorized distributor for Mitsubishi vehicles in our country has brought in the 2019 Eclipse Cross to our shores, which has an ever growing love for anything automotive. The MItsubishi Eclipse Cross as the name suggests is a crossover vehicle. On would suggest that it is too big to be deemed a crossover vehicle but that is due to our way of classifying cars as in the international market this is just a compact cross over vehicle. But putting the size talk aside for a while lets actually talk about the vehicle.

The exterior of the Eclipse Cross has a very sharp and angular design to it. The front end resembles the bigger Outlander quite a bit but is much sharper that its sibling. The LED DRLs (Daytime Running Lamps) house a pair of LED headlights which looks like an angry scrunched up eye. It follows Mitsubishi’s eclipse cross, design language with chrome garnish below the grille on each sides.

There are some sharp and angular character lines running on the side of the vehicle that gives it a very muscular appearance. It is riding on smart looking 18-inch rims. On the rear portion of the vehicle it has a high setup tail lights that split the rear window into two parts which looks quite unique and attractive. The Eclipse Cross can be visually deceiving at some angles as it looks much bigger than what it should be to be classified as a compact crossover.

The interior of the Eclipse Cross is themed in a rather sporty all black dash board. On top of the dash lives a HUD (Heads Up Display) that shows the speed that you are traveling in and the gear you are in (If you are in manual mode). The main purpose of the HUD is to keep your attention on the roads at all times. The 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system has become a norm these days, however the sound system is taken care by Rockford sound system which really steps up the enjoyment levels while listening to music. The steering wheel has all the necessary controls well within reach which makes it more convenient.

The fixed paddle shifters behind the steering wheel give you more control and adds to the driving experience. The fixed position means that you won’t have to be confused when you have to shift a gear mid turn and the steering wheel is upside down, with the paddles revered. Since it is mounted in a single position all you have to do is remember which side is to shift up and which side is to shift down.

The leather wrapped steering wheel is very ergonomic and fits well in the hand. The leather seats are very comfortable as well with plenty of cushioning and padding, making it a very plush place to be in. The driver seat and the front passenger seat have heating option as well for the cold chilly winter mornings. The Eclipse Cross also has a panoramic sunroof but unlike most modern sunroofs there is a pillar between the sunroof and the moonroof. The view out the rear is a bit obstructed due to the split glass design.

The Eclipse Cross is powered by a 1.5L engine, and before you turn your heads away thinking it’s just a 1.5L engine wait till you hear the full specs of the vehicle and then decide whether it has a capable engine or not. The engine is a 1.5L direct injection turbocharged unit producing 152 Hp @ 5,500 RPM and 250 Nm of torque @ 2,000 RPM. This comes paired to an 8 speed CVT transmission with sports mode available. The vehicle is quick and agile on its feet.

The gearbox might take a second to respond when you suddenly floor it but to cancel that out you can take over full control with the paddle shifters. To get out and about without the fear of getting stuck, the Eclipse Cross comes equipped with the SWAC system (Super All Wheel Control), this paired with the full time AWD (All Wheel Drive) makes sure that you can go exploring with little fear of getting stuck. The engine is punchy and once you hit the 5,500 RPM mark, you can really feel the engine putting the power down.

The Eclipse Cross is a very agile vehicle, ready to make sharp turns in an instant and ready to go where ever you point it towards. This paired with the punchy engine means that is a combination for a fun and thrilling driving experience. The car felt very planted through out the turns and gives you confidence to push harder. The fact that the steering is so responsive and has a good feedback moving through means that it is ready to rip through the turns. It has a list of active safety aids to make sure that you are safe while you are driving with features such as Active Stability Control (ASC), Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), Rear Cross Traffic Alert (RCTA), Forward Collision Mitigation (FCM), Adaptive Cruise Control System (ACC),Multi-View Camera System, Blind Spot Warning (BSW) and Automatic High Beam (AHB).

Since the Eclipse cross isn’t very big there wasn’t much body roll and everyone inside were pretty comfortable. While talking about comfort, the suspensions did a phenomenal job of absorbing most of the bumps on the road while maintaining stability through the corners. The driver seat and the front passenger seats were very comfortable to travel long distances in and the same can be said for the rear seats. The rear seat occupants had no issues traveling long distances during the review.

The grouping of vehicles in our industry is very confusing as there are different vehicles of different sizes and capacity that claim to be in the same category. So that being said don’t get a heart attack when you hear that this compact crossover comes in at the price of Rs. 1,02,50,000/- to Rs. 1,09,50,000/- The Eclipse Cross is a very well rounded vehicle; it is small and compact to be easy to drive in the city traffic while also being an amazing highway cruiser. It packs in a lot of cool features and will make sure that you are safe Incase of an accident with its host of safety features.
