Although fantastic new vehicles are regularly launched by major automobile manufacturers elsewhere in the world, only a handful are feasible for our roads. The global auto industry (particularly India) is looking for an enormous ride this year with exclusive launches set throughout the upcoming year. Best of all, not all the automakers have spilled details on what they’re bringing next year, so we can expect some surprises once they are announced. Here’s our top picks from the lot that could find its way into Nepal in 2016.
TATA ZICA HATCHBACK & KITE SEDAN:
The Indian automaker has already unveiled the ‘ZICA’ hatchback online. The much-awaited compact hatchback from Tata Motors is a replacement for the Indica and will be positioned below the Bolt in the company’s line-up. Scheduled for a January 2016 rollout, the Tata Zica hatchback is built on a thoroughly modified Indica’s XO platform and is the third product under the company’s HORIZONEXT umbrella. The hatchback will be powered by both petrol and a diesel engine. The petrol variant gets a 1.2 litre 3-cylinder Revotron engine which produces a solid 84 bhp @ 6000 rpm and max torque of 114 Nm @ 3500 rpm, while the diesel produces 67 bhp @ 4000 rpm and 140 Nm. Tata Motors will load the Zica with a plethora of features like Harman infotainment system, mounted audio and call controls, electronic power steering, height-adjustable driver seat, dual front airbags and ABS with EBD, electrically adjustable ORVMs and rear defogger, among many others. There is also going to be a compact sedan based on the Zica hatchback which will be launched later.
ALL-NEW FORD ENDEAVOUR:
Ford’s latest ‘ENDEAVOUR’ SUV redefines its segment while striking a delicate balance between rugged capability and refinement. Ford recently launched this bold seven-seated SUV in Thailand. The front fascia resembles an upright three-part grille, small sweptback headlamps, a stylish front bumper under-guard flows onto the bumper to merge into the fog lamps. Inside, the Endeavour will borrow design cues from its pickup truck sold mainly in the US such as the Ford F-150.The new Ford Endeavour will likely be sold with two engine and transmission options – a 2.2-litre 148 bhp diesel and a 6-speed manual transmission, and a 3.2-litre 197 bhp diesel and a 6-speed automatic transmission. We really hope Go Automobiles Pvt. Ltd, the sole authorized distributors of Ford vehicles in Nepal, will launch the 2016 Ford Endeavour in 2016.
The Suzuki Baleno, which is a global model in Suzuki’s line-up, is set to redefine the premium hatchback segment in the Indian and Nepali market. In India, the Suzuki Baleno comes with two engine options, both offering best-in-class fuel efficiency: the 1.3-litre DDiS diesel engine which makes 74 bhp and 190 Nm of torque with a fuel efficiency of 27.39 km/litre and the 1.2-litre K-Series VVT Petrol which makes 83 bhp and 115 Nm of torque with a fuel efficiency of 21.4 km/litre. Baleno also comes with a CVT option (Continuously Variable Transmission) in the petrol variant.Both the engines are mated to a five-speed manual transmission and the petrol engine is also available with CVT automatic gearbox.Besides several attractive features like projector headlamps with DRL, LED rear combination lamps, Touchscreen infotainment system, Multi information speedometer display, Reverse parking camera, etc., the Suzuki Baleno also comes with Apple CarPlay feature (1st car in India to offer this feature).
The Honda BR-V which is already available in the Indonesian market is a sevenseat crossover designed by Honda to take on the compact crossover segment. Built on the company’s ‘Active Solid Motion’ design philosophy, the Honda BR-V is powered by a highly refined and efficient 1.5-litre 4-cylinder i-VTEC® engine producing a peak 120 bhp of power and 145 Nm of torque. Exterior and Interior highlights include a muscular front with projector headlights, LED tail lights in C shape design, 16 inch alloys, roof rails, and new 16-inch aluminium alloy wheels with 195/60 tires, dualtone dashboard, touchscreen infotainment system with navigation and rear parking camera display. Standard safety features include airbags, ABS, EBD, and Hill Start Assist.
ALL-NEW TOYOTA FORTUNER:
With the new Fortuner, Toyota has focused on creating a more distinctive, sleek and powerful design while improving performance and adding a wide variety of features to increase convenience, safety and ride comfort. The Hilux-based Toyota Fortuner comes with a new 2.8-litre direct injection common rail diesel motor called the ‘1GD’, producing 174 bhp of total power output and 420 Nm of maximum torque, mated to six-speed transmissions. Toyota may offer the Nepal bound Fortuner with two engine options – a 2.8-litre diesel producing 177 bhp and 450 Nm of torque and a 2.4-litre diesel producing 150 bhp and 400 Nm of torque. No word yet on the availability in Nepal but we expect UTS, the sole authorised dealer of Toyota vehicles in Nepal, will launch the new Fortuner by mid-2016.
Renault’s new small car for the Indian market – the Kwid has taken the Indian automobile Industry by storm with overwhelming bookings. The Renault Kwid, which the company claims is the most fuel efficient petrol model in India with a mileage of 25.17 kmpl, is available at starting price of INR 2.56 lakh. Powering the Kwid is an all-new 800cc, three-cylinder petrol engine that churns out a maximum power output of 54bhp and 72Nm of peak torque. This engine comes mated to a 5-speed manual gearbox. The Renault Kwid is based on the company’s CMF-A platform. CMF-A stands for Common Module Family and the A stands for Affordable. Though Renault is still not present in Nepal, we hope the brand debuts here soon.
SUZUKI YBA COMPACT SUV:
The upcoming compact SUV from Maruti Suzuki, codenamed YBA, is expected to be launched in India soon. The YBA is a sub-4m model based on Suzuki iV-4 concept SUV that was seen at the 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show. Under the hood, the Maruti YBA SUV is expected to feature 1.2-litre K-Series engine and 1.3 litre diesel engine. The compact SUV could also get Maruti’s latest SHVS (Smart Hybrid Vehicle System) technology which was debuted with Ciaz SHVS. The YBA will be pitted against the likes of Hyundai Creta, Ford Ecosport and Renault Duster.
2016 HYUNDAI TUCSON:For 2016, Hyundai has refreshed its Tucson compact crossover with visible exterior and interior changes. The new Tucson gets Hyundai’s latest Fluidic Sculpture 2.0 design language. According to Hyundai, the new Tucson offers an unmatched combination of a modern design, enhanced driving dynamics, increased utility and the latest in safety and entertainment technologies.In the international market, the new Tucson is available in four distinct trim levels – SE, Eco, Sport and Limited and two engine options- a 4-cylinder 2.0 and a 1.6L turbo 4-cylinder petrol and diesel engines.
ALL-NEW 2016 MITSUBISHI PAJERO SPORT:
The all-new Pajero Sport is a new-generation mid-size SUV developed to a “Stylish & Comfortable Off-road SUV” concept. MAHINDRA KUV100:Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd. (M & M), has finally revealed its much awaited compact SUV codenamed S101, calling it the Mahindra KUV100 (pronounced as KUV ‘1 double Oh’) in India. The company also unveiled an all new engine family named mFALCON, marking its entry into the petrol space.The numeric ‘100’ represents the pecking order of the series which comes in below TUV300 and XUV500.Under the hood, the KUV100 will be powered by the newly-developed mFALCON engine, with options of both petrol (mFALCON, G80) and diesel (mFALCON, D75). The 1.2L, 82 HP and dual VVT petrol engine and the 1.2L 77 HP turbo-charged diesel engine both deliver high, low-end torque for the perfect SUV performance and an enjoyable drive.
ALL-NEW HYUNDAI ELANTRA:Now in its sixth generation, the all-new 2017 Hyundai Elantra builds on its global popularity by introducing a dynamic and sleek appearance, underlining its status and unique presence within the highly competitive compact-size sedan segment.As one of Hyundai’s all time best-selling models, the new Hyundai Elantra enters its sixth-generation building on the momentum and success of its proven award-winning formula and strong value proposition by offering a bold aerodynamic design with sophisticated styling, all-new efficient power-trains for enhanced fuel economy, better ride quality and noise insulation, and comprehensive safety with class-above features.For 2017, the new Elantra receives two all-new powertrains designed for improved fuel efficiency and everyday drivability performance. The TUV300 is available in 7 variants and 6 colors in India.
TATA HEXA:Tata’s new upcoming crossover – the Hexa has been spied testing in India. Consider as the Aria’s replacement, the Hexa will likely be powered by a 2.2-liter four-cylinder VARICOR 400 turbodiesel engine that delivers 154.2 hp at 4,000 rpm and 400 Nm. It will most likely be offered in a 6-speed manual or automatic transmission and all-wheel drive with drive mode selection features.
JAGUAR F-PACE:Maybe our expectations are way too high here. But considering, our SUV-loving rich folks, we would love someone to place an order for the F-Pace. As the British automaker’s first SUV, the F-Pace focuses on a sporty driving experience to separate it from what the model’s sister brand Land Rover has to offer.The F-Pace comes with three engine options. The range kicks off with Jaguar Land Rover’s 178bhp 2.0-litre four-cylinder Ingenium diesel, available with either rear or four-wheel drive, with a choice of six-speed manual or eight-speed auto transmissions. All other F-Paces are 3.0-litre V6- powered, with a choice of a 296bhp diesel or the 375bhp supercharged petrol also found in the F-type. Both are 4wd and eight-speed auto only.

This news has been a long time coming, and as per our reports, BMW will likely enter the Nepali market by mid-2016. According to our reports, the company is planning to roll out the 2016 BMW X1 along with other undisclosed models. The second generation of this successful compact sports utility vehicle, more than 730,000 units of which have now been sold, takes to the stage with a body design straight out of the BMW X model mould.Four-cylinder engines from the BMW Group’s latest generation of power units, an efficiency-optimised version of the BMW xDrive intelligent all-wheel- drive system and newly developed chassis technology, a host of innovative equipment features, alongside its market-leading dynamics and efficiency help to secure the new BMW X1 its stand-out position in the segment. We can’t wait to see these posh beauties rolling on our roads by this year.
