Automatic cars are easier to drive, as they come with only a two-pedal setup (accelerator and brake) and the driver doesn’t need to engage/disengage the clutch pedal to shift gears. Clutchless transmission setups are complicated but they have been designed to enable smooth driving and consume equal or less fuel than their manual counterparts.

Although most Nepalis still prefer manual transmission cars (because of their lower purchase price and repair costs), automatic cars make for great options for beginner drivers, as they significantly reduce the risk of stalling in stop-and-go traffic.

Here are five hatchback models that are offered with automatic transmission.

Hyundai Santro

The all-new Hyundai Santro was re-launched in Nepal in 2019. The car is powered by a 1.1L petrol engine. It comes mated to either a five-speed manual or a Smart-Auto automatic transmission. 

The Santro is Hyundai’s most fuel-efficient car in Nepal, and it provides an average mileage of 20 kmpl. But as the company has already announced that it will discontinue the model’s production in India, the popular hatchback’s presence here will probably be on the wane.

Currently, the Santro is available in four variants: the Era, Magna, and Sportz–among which only the Magna variant is offered with a Smart-Auto transmission.

Renault Kwid

The Renault Kwid was introduced in Nepal in 2016, with the launch of the 0.8L Kwid. The 0.8L Kwid had fared well here, and that’s perhaps why Renault launched the newer version of the Kwid, powered by a 1.0L Smart-control efficiency (SCe) engine, in 2017. The 1.0L engine comes mated to either a five-speed manual transmission or a five-speed AMT and it is capable of generating a power of 73 hp and a torque of 72 Nm.

The hatchback comes with notable features such as an LED digital instrument cluster, 8-inch infotainment system (compatible with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto), ABS with EBD, and rear parking camera with sensors.

Hyundai Grand i10 NIOS

The Grand i10 NIOS is powered by a 1.2-litre Kappa engine, which is mated to either a five-speed manual or a Smart-Auto AMT transmission. The engine can generate a peak power of 113 hp and a torque of 113 Nm.

Among the hatchback’s notable features are its 8-inch infotainment system (compatible with Apple Carplay and android Auto), 5.2-inch digital instrument cluster, automatic AC, tilt steering wheel, height-adjustable driver seat, folding rear seats, ABS, reverse camera, and rear parking sensors.

VW Polo 

The Volkswagen Polo is a coveted hatchback in Nepal that boasts strong architecture, high-quality parts, and robust safety systems. The VW Polo comes in two engine options: a 1.0L MPI and a 1.0L TSI. Both engines come mated to a five-speed manual transmission and the TSI engine is offered with only a five-speed automatic transmission.

The hatchback comes with notable features such as an adjustable multi-function steering wheel, touchscreen infotainment system, cruise control, rear parking camera, rear parking sensors, and speed-sensing auto door lock, among others.

Honda Jazz

Honda currently sells the Jazz’s 2018-model in Nepal. The hatchback is powered by a 1.2-litre i-VTEC engine that generates a power of 88 hp and a torque of 110 Nm. The engine comes mated to either a five-speed manual transmission or a CVT.

The Jazz comes with notable features such as keyless entry, adjustable steering wheel with mounted control buttons, paddle shifters (for CVT models) touchscreen control panel, ABS with EBD, and rear parking camera, among others.
