Bagmati province issues criteria standards for electric taxis

The Bagmati state government has issued the criteria for electric taxis–under the ‘Standards for quality, operation, and management of public passenger taxi service 2078’. Under the act, electric taxis have been divided into two categories: Ordinary Taxi and Deluxe Taxi.

Furthermore, the government has made it mandatory that 20-year-old taxis be converted to electric ones.

Here is the basic criteria for an electric taxi:

Body type

Currently, most ICE-powered taxis in Kathmandu are hatchbacks. However, the provincial government will only allow a five-seater sedan (for the Ordinary) or a five-seven seater sedan/van (for the Deluxe) to be operable as electric taxis.

The Standard Taxi must come with a minimum boot space of 200 litres and a ground clearance of 170 mm. Deluxe Taxis must have 50 litres of extra boot space and 5mm higher ground clearance.

The Ordinary Taxi must have a battery capacity of 20 kWh lithium-ion (or above) that generates a power of 30 kWh (or higher). And the Deluxe Taxi needs to be powered by a 40 kWh lithium-ion battery (or above) that will generate power more than or equal to 50 kWh.

As for range, Ordinary Taxis must provide a minimum range of 210 km, while those with an extra range of 75 km can qualify as a Deluxe.

Criteria regarding charger type, charging capacity, and time to charge have not been revealed yet.

Surprisingly, basic vehicle features such as air conditioning and sound system have been made optional for the electric taxis. All taxis, however, must come with a GPS system.

For safety, the Ordinary Taxi must come with features such as a driver airbag, central locking system, rear-door child lock, hill-assist, Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), and rear-view camera. Parking sensors are optional. The Deluxe must, however, come with added safety features such as dual front airbags, parking sensor, and ABS with Electronic Brake Distribution (EBD).
