Hatchbacks for under Rs 26 lakh that provide a mileage of above 20 kmpl

Since the announcement of the new taxation policy for the year 2079/80, Nepalis have had to rethink their plans for buying high-end four-wheelers. And with petrol and diesel prices hitting another record high this week, Nepalis four-wheeler fans are already in search of the most-fuel efficient cars and at an affordable price too.

In most companies’ vehicle lineups, hatchbacks are generally the entry-level models that provide the best mileage. Hatchbacks such as the Alto 800, Redi-Go, Santro, Kwid, and S-Presso, among others, have already gained popularity among Nepalis–mostly because of their affordable price and fuel efficiency.

And here are the hatchbacks for under Rs 26 lakh that provide a mileage of above 20 kmpl.

Maruti Suzuki Alto 800

The Maruti Suzuki Alto debuted in Nepal in 2001; later in 2013, the new-generation model was launched. Since the debut, the Alto has been one of the best-selling cars in Nepal.

The newer version of the Alto 800 is powered by a 796cc F8D type engine that generates a power of 35.3 kW at 6000 rpm and a torque of 69 Nm at 3500 rpm. Its engine is mated to a five-speed manual transmission.

The Alto has a fuel tank capacity of 35 litres and provides a mileage of 22.05 kmpl.

Datsun Redi-Go

The Redi-Go was introduced in Nepal in mid-2016, and used to be offered in three petrol-engine options: 0.8L (799cc), 1.0L (999cc), and Smart Drive Auto (999cc).

After discontinuing the vehicle powered with the 0.8L engine, Datsun has continued to offer the two remaining Redi-Go variants: the 1.0L, mated to a five-speed manual transmission, and the Smart-Drive Auto, mated to a five-speed automatic transmission. The car comes with a fuel tank capacity of 28 litres and provides a mileage of 21.7 kmpl.

Recently, Nissan has ceased the production of Datsun cars in India. However, the company will continue to sell its hatchbacks until stock lasts and will continue to provide after-sales service and warranty support.

The S-Presso offers Maruti Suzuki’s proven and reliable engine–the 1.0 litre, 3-cylinder version–that is also used in the Alto K10 and Wagon-R. The engine, mated with a five-speed manual transmission, generates 67 hp of power and 90 Nm of torque. The hatchback comes with a fuel tank capacity of 27 litres and provides a mileage of 21.4 kmpl.

Renault Kwid

The Renault Kwid was introduced in Nepal in 2016 with the launch of the 0.8L Kwid. The 0.8L Kwid had fared well here, and that’s perhaps why Renault launched the newer version of the Kwid, powered by a 1.0L Smart-control efficiency (SCe) engine, in 2017.

The Renault Kwid comes with 28 litres of fuel tank capacity and provides a mileage of 22 kmpl. Currently, the company offers two variants: the RXT ‘O’ and the Climber, at a starting price of Rs 26.79 lakh.

The hatchback comes with notable features such as an LED digital instrument cluster, 8-inch infotainment system (compatible with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto), ABS with EBD, and rear parking camera with sensors.

Hyundai Santro

The all-new Hyundai Santro was re-launched in Nepal in 2019. The car is powered by a 1.1L petrol engine. It comes mated to either a five-speed manual or a Smart-Auto automatic transmission.

The Santro is Hyundai’s most fuel-efficient car in Nepal, and it provides an average mileage of 20 kmpl. But as the company has already announced that it would discontinue its production in India, the popular hatchback’s presence will slowly fade-away from the showrooms.

Currently, the Santro is available in four variants: the Era, Magna, and Sportz.
