Maruti Suzuki to launch its newest Alto model on August 18

Maruti Suzuki is set to launch a new version of its bestselling vehicle–the Alto–on August 18. The third-generation Alto will be based on the company’s modular Heartect platform, which already underpins vehicles such as the Celerio, Wagon R, Ertiga, and XL6. Furthermore, the new hatchback will be powered by a new 1.0-litre K10C engine and will be offered in 12 variants.

Design and features

The new Alto, based on a new platform, is 3530 mm long, 1490 mm wide, and 1520 mm tall–meaning, the car is 85 mm longer and 45mm taller than its predecessors. And its wheelbase will increase by 20 mm–to 2380mm.

The new hatchback is likely to borrow a lot of design cues from the second-generation Celerio. Online spy images show that the vehicle will be more rounded, with redesigned grille, bonnet, and fog lamps.

Inside, the Alto is expected to get a refreshed cabin space with more convenience and tech features than on the outgoing models. The hatchback will get a 7-inch infotainment system for the higher variants. The vehicle might come with features such as keyless entry, power windows, electrically adjustable ORVMs, and rear parking sensors, among others.

Engine and transmission

The new Alto will retain its 1.0-litre K10C engine, which was previously discontinued during the BS6 transition. The new 998cc engine is capable of generating 66 bhp power at 5500 rpm and a torque of 85 Nm at 3500 rpm. The engine will be mated to either a five-speed manual transmission or an AMT.

Furthermore, the company will reserve its 0.8-litre K10B engine only for the current generation models. The engine, which is mated to a five-speed manual transmission, generates a power of 48 hp and a torque of 69 Nm.

The Maruti Suzuki Alto debuted in Nepal in 2001; later in 2013, the new-generation model was launched. Since the debut, the Alto has been one of the best-selling cars in Nepal. Currently, the company offers the Alto in a single variant–the Lxi–at a price of Rs 24 lakh.
