Vehicles to look out for in the New York Auto Show

As the New York International Auto Show kicks off, dozens of car companies have displayed their vehicles’ 2022 and 2023 models. While most of the models have been designed for the North American region, some global models such as Hyundai’s Palisade, Kia’s Niro EV, and Subaru’s Outback have also been unveiled for 2023.

Get to know these new models that have already made their own space in the Nepali market.

Hyundai Palisade

Hyundai’s 2023 Palisade features new exterior and interior design cues, updated infotainment and safety features, and advanced driver-assistance systems. The luxury SUV’s front and rear bumpers’ fascia has been redesigned, along with the front grille, headlamps, and DRLs. Inside, the seven-seater SUV gets a 12-inch infotainment system as standard, and its instrument panel, gauge cluster, and audio interface have also been redesigned.

The all-wheel drive SUV is powered by a 3.8-litre V6, dual CVVT, direct-injected engine that is mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission.

The new Palisade comes with a plethora of ADAS features such as forward collision-avoidance assist, blind-spot collision-avoidance assist, driver-attention warning, navigation-based smart cruise control, rear cross-traffic collision-avoidance assist, reverse parking collision-avoidance assist, remote smart parking assist, among others.

Kia Niro

Kia has unveiled the second-generation Niro CUV. The 2023 Niro is offered in three powertrain configurations: hybrid (HEV), plug-in hybrid (PHEV), and all-electric (EV).

The Niro HEV is powered by a 1.6L ICE-powered engine that is coupled with a 32kW PMSM motor. The engine generates 139 hp of power and is expected to provide a combined mileage of 22.5 kmpl.

The PHEV model comes with the same ICE-powered engine but is paired with a 64 kW PMSM motor. The 11.1 kWh battery can be charged fully in three hours via a Level 2 charger. The vehicle is expected to return an all-electric range of around 53 km on a full charge.

Similarly, the Niro’s EV model is powered by a 64.8 kWh battery and 150kW motor and it comes with a DC-fast charging capability as standard. The EV can charge from 10-80% in 45 minutes via a Level 3 charger, and it takes seven hours to charge fully via a Level 2 charger. On a full charge, the EV provides an estimated range of 407 km.

The Niro’s exterior design is influenced by the HabaNiro concept (like in EV6) featuring a signature tiger nose front grille flanked by DRLs and boomerang-shaped LED tail lights. Inside, the vehicle has been styled and upholstered with premium environment-friendly materials, and it borrows some tech design cues from the EV6–for example, it comes with a panoramic dual 10.2-inch screen.

The 2023 Niro EV is available with the same vehicle-to-load (V2L) onboard generator functionality pioneered by the EV6.
